About this Work
In his most recent work, Glowacki explores a poetic reunion with nature, in order to stimulate reflection on belonging and memory. Here, he uses two symbolic objects: the headdress and feet. Headdresses are prominent in traditional and folk Slavic culture. Associated with the ritual of creation, transformation and purification, a headdress symbolises the bridge between the physical and the spiritual. Feet have an allegorical connection to human experience, symbolising the foundation upon which the whole of existence is founded. Though they remain inherently tied to intention and will, feet also indicate freedom and discovery. Pure pigments and crystals balance sensation and emotion, and are a direct metaphor for alchemy and magic.
About Hesi Glowacki
Hesi Glowacki is an artist originally from Poland and now based in London, where he gained his BA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins. His practice centres on themes of memory, spirituality, ritual and ceremony, as well as queer mythologies. He uses a broad range of materials – from pure pigments to crystals – to portray with nuance and delicacy the poetics of Slavik culture, and of wider human existence. Moving between abstraction and figuration, he explores the connections between body and nature, internal and external, sacred and mundane, and materialisation and transcendence.
Glowacki’s work confronts the traditional boundaries of painting, combining drawings, objects, and elements of performance. The artist has developed his technique through lengthy periods of experimentation and research. Influenced by magic realism and alchemy, he reflects upon the body, trauma, and memory, drawing from concepts of ritual and ceremony, and notions of renewal and transformation.
