About this Work
The Memory Skeleton series is a body of work that has been developed by the artist over the past year. For Byrne, a “memory skeleton” is a set of core details needed in order to recall a memory, and for that memory to remain constant. So long as the bones of the memory remain in place, they act as a framework in which the additional details of that moment can be fleshed out. Through qualitative research, Byrne compiles information from participants, before interpreting their responses and translating these into the canvas. Some artworks offer a complete memory skeleton, while others only glimpses of an experience not fully remembered.
About Teresa Zerafa Byrne
Teresa Zerafa Byrne lives and works in London. She gained her BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art before completing an MA in Art and Science at Central Saint Martins in 2020. Her practice examines the nature and vulnerability of identity and memory, using the canvas to create a visual representation of the fragmentations and infidelities of perception.
Through her practice, Byrne interrogates the formation and recollection of memory. By examining the relationship between sensory perception, awareness and mind, she seeks to understand how the cerebrum selects certain memories for later recall, and filters others. Across her canvases, Byrne divides segments of memories into constituent parts, abstracting these forms to stimulate an emotional response over a literal representation. Largely influenced by the writings of theorists Henri Bergson and Gilles Deleuze, Byrne considers that when we remember, we invent our past, adapting and embellishing with every recall according to our current needs and desires. Through her explorations, Byrne questions the fidelity and validity of our perceptions of personal histories, in turn challenging how we think about identity and self.
