About this Work
Phan’s work uses photography as a thought-track of the world around him. He takes snapshots of various moments in his life and reconfigures them in new ways, giving pride of place to chance in his practice. He has an interest in data and digital formations in photography as a medium, often segmenting and combining multiple images in new ways and to create new perceptions, while never altering the original photograph beyond recognition. These works question reality’s relation to the concept of an image, and experiment with the existing environment. Each work accumulates and skews the idea of a painting and a photograph. First, each experiment is a moment in time; a mixture of memory and the fossilisation of natural occurrences. Phan seeks to represent reality in relation to his consciousness. The memory is later perceived as a flat image, as a brush stroke of time. He then proceeds to process the images within the concept that the body is an apparatus, similar to the camera. The photographs are then transmuted into singular images.
