About this work
Horizon Tautology is a collection of eight photographic incarnations of the same image done with a multiplicity of paper and textile manual strategies. The image is a landscape that represents the background for many of her memories. Whereas the repetition of the image speaks of the recurring act of remembering this place, the different plastic solutions translate autobiographical situations and sensorial connotations that have shaped this memory over time. This collection is visually linked by the horizon line, articulating a final organic composition suggesting different ways of remembering inside the general puzzle of memory. Horizon Tautology presents an experimental and innovative approach to photography tensioning the traditional idea of mechanized reproduction and expanding the limits of this medium.
About Constanza Valderrama
Constanza Valderrama is a Chilean artist based in London. She was awarded a two-year scholarship by the Chilean National Research Council (CONICYT) to conduct research at the Royal College of Art, from which she recently graduated with a MA in Photography. She has been awarded the highest distinctions by the Royal College of Art, Universidad de Chile and by the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
Her understanding of photography as a material thing has allowed her to explore the properties with which photographic images intertwine, a process that she refers to as ‘photographic incarnations’. These are processes in which images and materials coalesce. Consequently, her work emphasises the uniqueness and unrepeatable quality of a photograph, even in a digital format. Through diverse material experimentations and dialogues between digital and analogue processes, Constanza’s practice questions the limits of conventional photographic intervention and it’s traditional approach to reproduction. Her work displays an articulation of ordinary and low-cost materials, laser prints, low-quality images, and everyday thematics. These choices allow her to create a reflective critique of societal elitism, which very often roams around art and photography.
