About Lingrui Zhang

Lingrui Zhang (b.1994, Anhui, China) is currently based in Beijing. He gained his MA from the Royal College of Art, London, in 2020, where he also gained his BA in 2017. Zhang has featured in group exhibitions internationally, including: the Art Museum of CAA, Hangzhou, Royal Academy of Art, London, West Bund Art Centre, Shanghai, 69 Campus Art Centre, Beijing, Hockney Gallery, London, Sunny Art Centre, London, Coningsby Gallery, London, C2 Space, North District, and OCAT-LOFT, Shenzhen.

Zhang’s recent practice engages the pictorial and schematic language of painting itself. Most of the objects depicted have gone through self-dissolution and the concealment of specific identities and characteristics; the artist approaches meta-painting through his work. Zhang pays attention to the extension of the painting medium as an ontology, and how it participates in the broad visual observation of people in the contemporary context. He tries to free himself from the boundaries between objects, images and materiality, in order to cultivate a psychological separation between the work and the viewer.
