About this Work
Caring Coot was taken in the artist's childhood park, Regent’s Park, during spring, in the first lockdown of the pandemic. The photograph is part of a series of observations exploring the nurturing behaviours of birds and interspecies relationships: an extension to her ongoing documentation of these experiences at home. The image focuses on a mother Coot diving for twigs to build a nest for her newborns. This is the artist’s first photographic print, initiating her experiments in analogue photographic processes.

About Korallia Stergides
Korallia Stergides is an Interdisciplinary artist based in London and Cyprus. She graduated in BA Performance Design and Practice at Central Saint Martins, UAL, in 2016, and is currently undertaking an MFA in Fine Art Media at The Slade School of Fine Art, UCL. Recent exhibitions include at APT Gallery, London, Saatchi Gallery, London, HAUS, Athens, and VCAM, Philadelphia. Stergides has collaborated with, among others, the ICA, London, the British Film Institute, London, Chisenhale Gallery, London, BBC, Siobhan Davies Dance, the Natural History Museum, London, and the Watermill Center, New York.
Through her work, Stergides reimagines the intimacy of “home”, and inter-species relationships. She explores the vital politics of care in an interdependent world, and emphasises nonhuman agencies, developing various characters to “remythologise”
autobiographical narratives. These enquiries are explored by interweaving multiple media: performance, installation, object making and sculpture, printmaking, photography, film, poetry and sound. Across these forms, the artist invites the audience to experience a transformation. Being the daughter of a soldier and refugee from Famagusta in Cyprus in 1974, this experience instigated an abstracted relationship to Stergides’s sense of home. She has used this notion of disconnection and displacement as a method of organising and exploring narratives in her work. The core of her most recent work explores ephemerality, vulnerability and touch using sensitivity and collective gestures. She aims to raise awareness and accessibility of dithering anthropocentric events by merging myth and fact, attempting to forecast tomorrow’s future, and reevaluating our understanding of the natural world.
