Unexpected last meal, 2020
Acrylic and ink pen on canvas
45 x 65 cm
About this Work
My days and Unexpected last meal are part of a series titled Missing pages. In these works, Park focuses on stories about specific objects surrounding different foods and clothes. Like a diary entry, Park uses descriptive writing about the objects, and experiments with combinations of traditional Korean painting styles and contemporary European painting techniques, predominantly using the act of layering. The artist expects his works to reveal the object’s originality, contextualising it within a specific time. The artist’s hope is that the progress of selling the works one by one will result in the dimming and abstracting of the memories depicted in these pieces. If in a future iteration Park were to set up an exhibition with all of the sold pieces, the process would be reverted and regarded as a reminder of the vanished memories.
About Hyunwook Park
Hyunwook Park has a BFA in Traditional Korean Painting, a BA in Cross-Cultural Studies, a BA in Studies of Global Culture Contents, and an MA in Fine Art from Sung Kyun Kwan University, Seoul. In 2020, he completed an MFA in Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL. Recent exhibitions and projects include Saatchi Gallery, London, Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, London, and a residency at GlogauAIR, Berlin.
Park’s recent practice centres on notions of ordinary times, and everyday existence. For the artist, these areas constitute the largest part of life, though they are often considered as less important. His work predominantly considers objects of consumption and fleeting moments, both subject to disappearance. Park’s objective is to reconsider and preserve these objects, renewing them through the gaze of the viewer.
