About this Work

Candice Jewell’s feminist works challenge gender constructions by abstracting and concealing her own body into pure form and object. Jewell stitches together elaborate coverings made from quotidian materials such as net fabric, make-up pads and crepe paper - which she then hides beneath, alluding to the alter egos and personas we create for ourselves. The images present ambiguous genders, removing the filter of a male or female gaze, allowing the viewer to recognise the desire to hide and protect the self, which can ultimately become a liberating action.

In Jewell’s latest work, the voluminous netted costume represents the errors made in trying to understand how to be your normal self, while the layers and twisted parts signify the lies and performances you've put on to become someone else's image of perfection, and only now realise how far from yourself you truly are.

"The body has its invariably public dimension; ... my body is and is not mine. Given over from the start to the world of others, bearing their imprint, formed within the crucible of social life, the body is only later, and with some uncertainty, that to which I lay claim to as my own." Judith Butler from  'Undoing Gender'

About Candice Jewell

The Visitor is part of a new series inspired by the artist’s personal struggle with her health and her self-worth throughout her childhood and adolescence. The internal battle caused by this experience, which led to insecurities and difficulties accepting herself, caused Jewell to reflect on, and subsequently challenge the meaning of identity. Back then, concealing her body made her feel free, something she considers both ironic and disappointing. In her current works, she recreates this hide-and-seek, disguising her body beneath layers of crepe paper.
