About this Work
Hold On, Let Me Ask My Mom First! is a triptych exploring a set of photographs of David’s parents from the Eighties and Nineties. Printed on translucent paper, these images combine to portray a sense of fragmentation, appearing as a hazy recollection of happier times. As with the other work presented here, the pieces show handwritten Hindi text in cryptic bursts. For the artist, this is a demonstration of the privacy of her own notes – an element retained solely for the artist within a body of work that is otherwise largely outward-facing. For this piece, these words consist of lyrics taken from Bollywood love songs, melding with lace and sari fabric to give a playful, comedic sentiment to the work.
About Sara David
Sara David is a London-based multidisciplinary artist working with themes around race and social politics through the device of food. David graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2020 with a BA in Fine Art and is currently completing her MA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art. David’s practice spans painting, performance, installation and predominantly moving image.
Through her output, David explores her own identity as a first-generation British South Asian female navigating through a space of unrest. Often, she works collaboratively with others from fellow artists to various family members, initiating discussions around the potential of art to have a positive social impact. Her work both critiques and values the spaces it operates within; especially as something that can become more accessible and open for those from marginalised and underrepresented communities.
