About this Work
Within Myself was first presented at “London Grads Now” at Saatchi Gallery, London, earlier this year. In the piece, a body glitches at the wall’s periphery, while simultaneously remaining trapped inside a semi-transparent membrane. A constricted movement, an internal fight, and a fragmented reality: these are the ideas on which the production of this piece is based. Stillness in a violent motion that stimulates the curiosity of the viewer towards the intentionality of the movement.
About Giulia Federici
Giulia Federici is an Italian artist currently based in London. She gained her BA in Painting, Drawing and Performative Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts, Rome, before completing an MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins. Working predominantly with sculpture, the artist interrogates the limitations of human interaction in conveying experience. Her work has been shown internationally, including at the Musei Capitolini, Rome, and Saatchi Gallery, London.
Through her practice, Federici considers subjective perceptions of reality, how these are effectively communicated, and how this process affects human interaction. Central to her work is the question: how can we know what someone else is experiencing? This question is based on the knowledge that reality is constructed from pre-encoded information. It’s meaning is necessarily subjective and the information we extrapolate from it is largely arbitrary. It is therefore difficult to communicate. Through her sculptures, the artist underlines the place of symbols and analogies as useful tools in the transfer of feeling and emotion.
