A Melody, 2019 (detail)
Nylon thread and plaster casts
Variable dimensions (approx. 250 cm)
About this Work
A Melody, presented here, is composed of three sets of wall-based plaster casts of fingers, and segments of nylon thread running between them. The casts are arranged at a distance from one another to help create a feeling of lightness in the installation. Suggesting a movement, a light touch and almost a sound, the installation invites the viewer to develop a mental connection with the piece, using their imagination to fill in the gaps of what might be happening in that frozen motion.
About Giulia Federici
Giulia Federici is an Italian artist currently based in London. She gained her BA in Painting, Drawing and Performative Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts, Rome, before completing an MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins. Working predominantly with sculpture, the artist interrogates the limitations of human interaction in conveying experience. Her work has been shown internationally, including at the Musei Capitolini, Rome, and Saatchi Gallery, London.
Through her practice, Federici considers subjective perceptions of reality, how these are effectively communicated, and how this process affects human interaction. Central to her work is the question: how can we know what someone else is experiencing? This question is based on the knowledge that reality is constructed from pre-encoded information. It’s meaning is necessarily subjective and the information we extrapolate from it is largely arbitrary. It is therefore difficult to communicate. Through her sculptures, the artist underlines the place of symbols and analogies as useful tools in the transfer of feeling and emotion.
