About Eleanor Newis

Eleanor Newis is a multidisciplinary artist and musician making work that is autobiographical and intimate. She graduated with a BA (Hons) in English Literature and Language in 2012, before gaining an MFA in Painting from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2020. She received the Audrey Wyckham Prize in 2020. Recent shows include London Grads Now at the Saatchi Gallery (2020), Pulling Teeth at ASC Gallery (2019), and the Creative Society Lates programme (2019).

Newis’s practice spans textiles, music, writing, painting, and video. She creates autobiographical, intimate pieces that speak of personal stories and emotional spaces. She is fascinated by nostalgia, and frequently uses memories, archived objects, video footage, and old fabrics to create works with narrative potential. In addition, the artist creates installations that are visceral, life-size emotional landscapes. The bedroom installation Dream Debris, staged during her MFA, brought the viewer into private places to explore voyeurism, closeness and femininity. In this way, Newis invites the audience to join her in exploring her memories, fantasies, and inner thoughts.
