About this Work
This painting was created in response to one of Albrow’s poems titled “Battleships for your birthday”. The poem is a way for her to make sense of her own dreams and thoughts, and how she tries to hold on to the sensation of dreaming once she’s awake. One of the major running themes in her work (and dreams) has been the integration and symbolism of teeth, suffering herself from bruxism (teeth grinding).
About Haydn Albrow
Haydn Albrow is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in London, where she is currently undertaking an MFA in Sculpture at Slade School of Fine Art, UCL. Previously, she studied Fine Art at the Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design, where she was awarded 2nd place in the Owen Rowley Prize during the undergraduate degree show. Recent exhibitions include at Saatchi Gallery, London, and Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, London.
Albrow works across large-scale sculptural works, installations, poetry and sound. Her work often addresses themes of the conscious and unconscious mind; thinking of our brain as a machine that manipulates, interprets and manoeuvres memories, language and dreams into tangible thoughts and ways of thinking. More recently she has been exploring language, and the discourses that evolve through conversations about the act of dreaming. This has brought her to interrogate the ways we interpret our dreams, as well as everyday scenarios that we experience, and how we can relate them to each other. The artist sees all materials as tools for both drawing and performance, stating: “My work reflects in equal parts the processes of making and the processes involved in thought, and I create sculptures that contain a performative, interactive element.”
