About this work

About Francisca Sosa López
Francisca Sosa López is an artist living and working in London. She gained her BA in Fine Art and Art History from the University of Colorado, Boulder, in 2015, before going on to graduate from MFA Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, in 2020.
Sosa López’s practice considers Venezuela’s political, economic and social turmoil, including the migration crisis. Reflecting on these issues, the artist produces work based on her personal feelings, reactions, disappointments and affections, in a practice that encapsulates her complicated relationship with her country. She employs a process of recalling a memory, or playing a certain song, that gives way to a particular feeling, and attempts to capture it through gestures and colour. She uses a broad range of materials in these works, from paper to fabric and, more recently, discarded materials, in an attempt to cultivate a more sustainable practice while responding to the lack of materials at hand during the first part of the Covid-19 crisis. In addition, the use of various techniques and textures allows her to use materiality as another form of expression, and feeds into her personal process of using mark making to tease out her thoughts while she writes letters. Sosa López draws parallels between the concept of making something beautiful from accumulated trash, and the moment when she and others can pick up the debris, and rebuild Venezuela.
